"It is said in the times of yore that the Questboards were created by the Originators to test the fortitude and creativity of new dreamers to ensure the future of the Dream." ~Bentis
The Questboards are interactive terminals that allow players and GMs to create dynamic quests for other players. Their primary purpose is as tools to foster interaction and activity amongst players based on player and GM storylines. Additionally, the boards offer a vehicle for rewarding these activities, through storyline information, experience, and items.
Our idea in developing the feature set for the Questboards was simple. Create a small group of solid features that can be combined in many different ways to facilitate and foster any number of different storylines. To that end we created the following features: User descriptions, Item quests, Location quests, Linked quests, Experience rewards and Item rewards.
User Descriptions
The quest creator can create a text description for the beginning and completion of every quest. The text description allows a great amount of freedom and power for the creator. It also provides a creative outlet, which can add greatly to the overall role-playing environment. The way in which the description is presented and the information provided greatly shapes the feel of the quest as a whole.
Item Quests
The quest creator can choose practically any item in the world, as well as just about any combination of stat features of that particular item to be required for the completion of a quest. This type of quest can be used to help the questee or the quest creator. It can be used to propel a particular storyline forward, because the item in question is an important clue.
Location Quests
The quest creator can choose a location from a large and varied list, as the requirement for completion. The questee must find the location and physically enter it to complete the quest and obtain the reward. Imagine a storyline where a particular area becomes infected by a malignant presence to which the storyline creator can use location quests to build up the settings and the movement of the presence.
Linked Quests
This is an especially exciting feature. The quest creator can link quests together such that the completion of one signals the beginning of another. Each quest in the quest chain can be either Item or Location quests. This feature allows you to take a deeper storyline and flesh it out over a series of connected quests.
Experience and Item Rewards
The quest creator can choose between an experience reward and an item reward. Dreamers that are eligible as quest creators get a daily amount of experience that can be used as, and only as Questboard rewards. Quest creators can also put one of their own items "into" the Questboard as a completion reward.
Take all of these features, and add the fact that they can be combined in hundreds of different combinations, and you have a very exciting system that places the power in players' hands.
